How to Get a Family Visa for Iceland

Going to Iceland to stay with family or relatives? You are going to need to get a Family Visa for Iceland (also known as the Family Reunification Visa). This type of visa is designed for the person that intends to study in Iceland for immediate family members of an Icelandic citizen or other Nordic citizens residing in Iceland, or a foreigner residing in Iceland who has one of the following residence permits:

  • Qualified professional
  • Doctorate student
  • Athlete
  • Humanitarian reasons
  • Permanent residence permit

You are going to need to apply for this type of visa at the applicable embassy/consulate before travelling to Iceland (or anywhere in the Schengen area since Iceland is a member of the Schengen group of countries).

Find your closest consulate
  • If you’re inside the U.S., click here.
  • If you’re outside of the U.S.: Click here.
  • The address for the immigration office is: The Iceland Directorate of Immigration, Skógarhlíð 6, 105 Reykjavik. The office is open Monday to Friday from 10.00 – 14.00.
Gather documentation
Visa fee
  • For the visa fee, go to the website of the consulate or embassy you found in step 1.
Submit materials
  • Submit your required materials from Step 2 and visa fee from Step 3 to the embassy or consulate you found in Step 1.
  • Your embassy or consulate will have specific instructions.
Receive your visa

Congratulations!  The Embassy or Consulate of Iceland will give to you your brand new Iceland visa.
