Australia’s largest cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. Each city has an abundance of apartment search opportunities.

Below is a selection of the best resources for searching for an apartment in Australia.

Australia Apartment Search Engines

When I’m looking for an apartment abroad, I normally like to start with the country-specific apartment search engines and portals. Here are the most popular ones.

  • DomainDomain.com is the most popular real estate site in Australia. You can find places to rent, stay, or to buy here.
  • Real Estate: RealEstate.com.au is another popular site that specializes in long term rentals, but you can find holiday options here too.
  • Rent-a-home: If you are interested in renting a home, check out this site.
  • Stayz: Stayz specializes in holiday accommodation.

Classifieds and Real Estate Agents

You can often find some hidden gems if you dig through the classifieds and real estate agent listings.

  • Craigslist: Pioneers in the internet classifieds space. These guys have tons of Australia apartment options that are updated daily. Craigslist is the first place I would check after testing out the Australia-specific search engines.
  • Gumtree: Gumtree is a big classifieds site that I mentioned on my South Africa apartment post.
  • Century 21: Century 21 is a well known real estate site.
  • LJ Hooker: LJ Hooker is a good online real estate portal.

  • Trip Advisor: Trip Advisor is a great destination for vacation rentals. Search around this site to see what you come up with.
  • Vrbo.comA giant in the vacation rental space with properties featured in countries around the world.
  • AirbnbAirbnb has properties displayed for over 185 countries. You can often get some pretty good deals for short term rentals.
